My research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of why animals behave differently from each other. We are using transcriptomics and bioinformatics approaches (e.g. RNA sequencing and microarray) to unveil the link between genes and behavior.

I am generally interested in understanding how phenotypic plasticity helps organisms cope with environmental variation. I am currently exploring the ways in which paternal experiences with predation risk alter the phenotypes of future generations, whether these paternal effects have different consequences for sons versus daughters, and how these paternal effects differ from maternal effects.

Postdoc

I am generally interested in cognitive evolution, including the mechanisms generating cognitive variation, and the ecological and evolutionary consequences of that variation. I came to the Bell lab to learn neurogenomic techniques (e.g., whole genome gene expression, chromatin accessibility, viral mediated transgenesis, immunohistochemistry). My current research focuses on how paternal care affects offspring behavior, and the molecular mechanisms underlying these behavioral differences.

Evolution, Ecology & Behavior

My research focuses on parental care and its underlying genetic mechanisms. To better understand the connection between genome and behavior I’m currently studying two stickleback populations that vary greatly in the level and type of care provided to their offspring.

Katie Julkowski

Lab Manager

My role is to ensure the operations in the lab run smoothly and to work with the post-doctoral researchers and graduate students on their research projects. In the last year, I have focused on parental care as well as differences in the brain and body of two stickleback populations.
